Little Baby Alice

She was about 3.5 lbs and 3 weeks old when I joined the new family at their home for a few hours to meet her and capture a few special moments.

Being a Mom is MORE than a Full-Time Job

Having my son has been the hardest and yet most rewarding thing I have ever done.

I get asked a lot why I am not back working more again...I guess it is a personal choice, but right now I am trying to be the best mom I can be to my son. I want to give him my full attention when he needs me, and well when I go into my creative world I go deep into another place. I want my work and my clients to receive my full attention when I do work as well, and thus the problem of me working more again is unveiled: I can't be offering my full attention in two directions.

Do I miss it? Of course I do! Some days more than others, but I think of the things I would miss with my son.

What now? Well this is an open ended answer as I am still processing what the future holds for me, holds for the business...

I did experiment with some infant photography for a friend the other day. It was fun to be behind the camera again, and despite not being an area I am familiar with we ended up with some winners :-) I do not think I will go down the kid photography route though...unless it is for a friend of course. I will talk with her to see if I can post a few - stay tuned.

I am going to get to shoot an engagement session side by side again with my photography teacher, mentor, and friend Brittany Kelly in October at Gettysburg Battlefield.

In August I am going to take down the current gallery wall of my photography and paintings at Follow Your Heart Yoga and do a new install of some of my newer abstract work.

And I think I may be ready to try to find a wedding or two for Fall or Spring. I'm gonna be picky though! I would love an outdoor, more intimate wedding up here in Frederick. I have been wanting to get a couple having their special day at one of the many beautiful and historic places around here such as Sugarloaf Mountain, Comus Inn, etc. Maybe by putting this out into the world something will come to fruition.

Sorry for how long it has been since I have updated you, but I hope this helps everyone know where things are with me and the business. I am still around doing my art and photography, just in very limited engagement!

Beautiful Pregnant Belly

My girlfriend Marcia came to visit me for 4 days on a whim vacation. After feeling extremely crappy for a few months with my 1st pregnancy I was so happy to have some pregnant companionship with someone who has shared a lot with me in the last 8 years. Usually I am the one who does the advice giving, but she is about 10 weeks ahead of me in the pregnancy so this time the tables are turned.

While she was visiting she asked if I would do some belly photos for her, and although this was a new subject matter for me (if you will) I said I would try...I am not sure if this is a new route I may go, or because of our friendship and connection I was just able to really capture some special moments. Either way these are my top 10 in no particular order!

I love you Marcia! Can't wait to meet the little man...

Cousin/Sibling Photo Shoot

I had the opportunity yesterday to photograph 4 kids (ages 18 months to 15 years). The neat part was they were all related...brothers, sisters, cousins. We had a great time at the park, and I learned how vital the ducks were in keeping the littlest one entertained through the photos :-)

I am still editing and weaning down the photos (with kids you learn to just shoot a lot due to blinks and funny faces). These are my favs from the afternoon...enjoy the sneak peak!

Western Shore of Maryland

This past weekend Rob and I went to visit my Uncle who lives in California...California, Maryland that is...

Just like the confusion with many of the city's names making you do a double take, so is it's name of the "Western Shore." This area isn't West within the state at all, but it is the West peninsula of the Chesapeake, and thus the name.

We had an amazingly clear cloudless day, but the temperatures were still hovering around 30 with wind chill.

Above pictured are the Calvert Cliffs formed over 15 million years ago when Southern Maryland was covered my shallow sea. These cliffs are best known for the over 600 species of fossils which have been found amongst these rocks; the most numerous fossils found are that of shark.

Knowing that the weather conditions would probably lend to a beautiful sunset we went out to find some good photo opportunities right at dusk. We drove to Solomons Island and found some breathtaking beauty. Nature did not let me down...the sunset was quite wonderful!

When the weather gets nicer and boating season starts again we will definitely be back to traverse this area from the water. Solomans Island was a quaint sailing town with what looked to be some great restaurants and bars, although seasonal like much of Marylands' shore towns.

Exploring My Ancestory

While researching different parts of Germany for my upcoming travels I learned more about the area called Bavaria where my ancestors rein from...

Bavaria prides itself on its uniqueness known for its variety of beautiful lakes, forests and the towering summits of the Alps. Upper Bavaria has its own highlights, which include beautiful castles and gorgeous monasteries.

Beer is not merely considered to be a beverage in Bavaria, it is their cultural heritage [and a daily staple if anything like my family]. Bavarian beer (brewed according to the purity regulations of 1516) is world-famous; the hops used in its production are grown in Bavaria itself.

Bavarians are characterized as either loud and brash or as humorous, warm and fun-loving depending on who you meet. [This explains a lot! Even after many generations since our family lived in Bavaria these traits prevail.]

In eastern Bavaria, glassworks and porcelain manufactorers carry on traditional crafts. [Maybe my creativity and artistic talent comes from generations past...it is in my blood.]

Nick & Annie are married!

It is such a pleasure to be present emotional and mentally at a wedding to enjoy the day for the love of the couple. I had almost forgotten what attending, not working, at a wedding was like.

This past weekend our friends Annie & Nick were married in West Chester, Ohio and we had the privilege of being guests – what a wonderful feeling! They are such a great couple and the wedding had many personal touches from each of them.

Before our move from Ohio I did help Annie design her centerpieces. She wanted something that was winter, but not holiday; elegant yet not overdone. I think we found a great and unique grouping that helped set the mood and theme.

For their wedding present I used photos from their engagement session I shot earlier last year and created a photo guest book. I love that guests have fun looking through the photos of the couple while signing, and that the couple have a keepsake of photos and notes of wishes from their family and friends for years to come.

It was great seeing you and being able to be there on your special day!

Right now I have no plans for the future other than to make the plans. I'm not really sure what I'll do, or where life is taking me on this crazy ride.

As Tristan Prettyman put it in her recent blog that I so connected with, "The world is my fishbowl. Maybe i'll get married and have 6 kids. Maybe tomorrow i'll wake up and finally be inspired to write a song. Maybe I'll stumble upon a new path, go back to school, get my degree. Maybe i'll become a raw/vegan chef...Im getting really good at that..Or perhaps I will become so dedicated to my yoga practice, I will become a Yoga teacher. Im not really sure. But i do know, that everything happens for a reason, and getting lost is usually the most memorable part of the adventure."

So not everything exactly applies...I mean I am already married, and instead of getting inspired to write it would be painting...chef maybe, but not vegan or raw I like too many yummy things not in these categories. However a lot of the other things Tristan writes about apply. Who knows what is to come, I certainly don't...right now I feel lost in a world of familiarness, uncertainty, and confusion all rolled into one.

Tips on Choosing a Wedding Photographer

In the last few months a lot of people have asked my opinion on how to choose a good photographer so I decided more of you might want to hear my opinions so here you go...

First and foremost the wedding couple need to decide what kind of photos they are looking for...do you want more traditional (posed, conservative, large family groupings); photojournalistic (capturing emotion, feeling, moments, not posed); mix of the both. Then, review different photographers websites and blogs to see samples of their recent weddings and when you find a photographer whos work inspires you set up a meeting. Not only does a photographer's work need to inspire you, but you have to feel at ease with your photographer: remember your photographer is there with you through your most intimate and special moments of your day.

A lot of people don't realize that getting great photos takes time. Involving your photographer early in your planning process can also help to assure you are allowing a realistic amount of time for photos to happen. These days a lot of couples are opting to see each other before the ceremony to get all the photos done so not to keep guests waiting at the reception for their arrival; others are doing bridal shots the day after the wedding to get those amazing couple shots without the stress.

If your budget allows for a 2nd photographer on your day this is a wise investment. Remember even your photographer is human and having a 2nd angle on your wedding day is an insurance policy that an important moment isn't missed. Having 2 photographers also makes sure that the groom is not totally forgotten. Some grooms are more involved and having a photographer with the groom as he gets ready is more and more common. Many photographers include this 2nd photographer in their packages already so check for these details when comparing pricing.

Good photographers are still in high demand despite the economy and may get booked over a year out so interviewing your photographers early in your planning process is a must to get the right person for you.

I loved looking out my hotel window out to the sand and the ocean, and going to sleep hearing the crashing of the waves. For a Floridian girl these images and sounds evoke warm thoughts...those thoughts were about all we had to keep us warm this past weekend when I shot my college girlfriend's wedding in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Despite the chilling temperatures and gusty winds everyone was a great sport and still went outside to brave the weather to get the shots!

Yes, Shannon went outside in her open back satin gown...burrr, but WOW was it worth it.

I want Shannon to come with me to every wedding...she knows how to position herself for the shot.

I had lots of fun with Shannon & Brian over the weekend at their wedding in Delaware. Neither of these two are shy...I think they are both hams at heart, which I completely love!

Cloud 9 is a local Restaurant and Bar in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and let me tell you it is a must on your list of places to eat and visit! The food was amazing, the drinks stellar, the staff were friendly and attentive, and the colorful decor and artwork was vibrant...this place has a great energy.

The bartender makes one of the best mojitos outside of Florida!!! Wow, those babies will knock your socks off - YUM.

The "Green Art Movement" - Crushed Can Art

Using recycled aluminum cans as our canvas, NOLAA artists merge art with recycling. Each artist will have 12 original crushed can artworks on display at the NOLAA Gallery - Friday, November 21st - for a special night of art, wine, and music.

Visit to the Eastern Shore

Rob and I drove out just over 100 miles from our house this weekend to do a little exploring on Maryland's Eastern Shore. We are having such beautiful weather in November, and we both love getting around the water - so off we went.

The little town that we really fell in love with was St. Michaels. We had some great fresh seafood - crab cakes and clam strips - sitting outside at this local eatery.

After lunch we walked around town to see more of the place on foot. The houses are mainly renovated from the 1800s and have so much character. I liked the purple door on this one. Notice the door knocker?

There is a small local brewery in the town (just opened this year), and for $3 this sampler was a steal! And a great afternoon pick-me-up...

We capped off the night by driving a little further South and were graced by a beautiful sunset on the calm Chesapeake Bay.

We will definitely be back...

Organic Bird's Nests by my aunt (in law) JoAnna MacCuspie

My Aunt-in-Law is a very talented fiber artist in Cape Cod.

Throughout my years with my husband and getting to know his side of the family I was constantly given support and a push to follow my passion by his Aunt Jo. It is always great to get that advice from someone who practices what they preach.

One of Jo's trademark items are her bird's nests. I had fun photographing with my macro lense the other day and decided to show you some of the details. She actually collects the natural materials like a bird would picking and choosing fallen items along her way. She then knits the sticks together using fibers, and fills them with shells and clay eggs.

This particular nest was given as a gift to us, and was created using items found on the family house grounds - holding special meaning.

The cooperative gallery I am part of back in Yellow Springs, Ohio had a great idea - offering Q&A time with the artists so you get to know us beyond our trade. I LOVED the idea so much I am going to add some Q&As about me on here to add some more fun to life :-)

Q: What piece of winter clothing can you not live without?

A: Definitely my Uggs!!! Oh, how I love the Uggs. It has gotten cold enough in the last week to pull out my new pair, courtesy of my husband for my birthday (thanks hun!), and I had almost forgotten how happy they make me...almost. I actually wore out the inside sheepskin from my 1st pair in just under two years because I wore them so often. I hate socks, and really like being barefoot so Uggs for me are my winter foot sanity :-)

I own the chocolate (not pictured, and pink ones)...

Jeweled Blooming Branches

I wanted to play around this week with new materials and experiment. The result - "Jeweled Blooming Branches" - I am excited to see how they are received...I personally really liked how they turned out :-)

The pieces are original acrylic paintings on canvas adorned with paper layered flowers and glass beads.

They will be for sale at the NOLAA Gallery next month unless someone claims any before they are shipped out.

A great discovery - water lily gardens near my house!

By driving around looking for new places to explore one afternoon I found a sanctuary - Lilypons! It is a nature preserve where they raise tons of different varieties of water flowers, but mainly lilys and some lotuses.

Rob asked to go back with me when I returned to photograph so I didn't hurt myself (mainly because I had fallen down stairs the week before). I obliged, and he even got a few of me at work. I am just glad I never fell in (unintentionally) or ruined any equipment!

Here are two of the shots from that flower I was photographing above...

Well, I really wanted the shot, and photographing from the banks of the larger ponds was not what I wanted...so...I went in (ewwie!!!). Except for the tadpoles and other things I couldn't see swimming between my toes I lived :-)

And below are 4 more shots that I got while risking the wade into the yucky waters...

The below photo will give you a better idea of some of the ponds. I can not wait to be here for peak bloom next summer!!!

Art Pendants & Magnets - New inventory in the works

I have not been as productive as I would have hoped over the last month or so, but given the move and having to transfer the business to a new state, etc I guess my productivity over the last few days makes up for something :-)

I had a few more pieces of past origami papers yet to use on my art pendants so here are the newest pendants from that series in the works...

I got so excited the other day because I found the best origami pattern to date...Tokyo Cherry Blossoms!!! My cherry blossom painting in pendant and print form has been the best seller this year, and because of that, and well my love of them, I am introducing a limited edition cherry blossom pendant line. My art magnets also were a surprise hit. I sold out of the first batch before I left, and have had requests for more. So ask and you shall receive (eventually).

Handmade Notecards for all Occassions

One of my many goals before next week was to get some notecards created to be sold at the NOLAA Gallery since the gallery just ordered a new card display rack, and well I can't let that go to waste. I hadn't had a "light bulb" moment of inspiration of what I wanted to do for them because well I wanted to be different...that is until today, and then the light bulb went off!

Although I have been working crazy hours (even through my birthday) editing and processing images from this wedding - seeing the final products of my labors always makes me happy.

I am amazed how many people don't do programs these days. I personally am a fan of having them for the guests, plus they make great photo backdrops.

This may be my favorite photo of a bride's dress I have taken yet...thanks to Root Photography for the inspiration from one of their past shoots!

I absolutely adored this family, and found it such a sweet moment to be able to witness as all the women family members took a moment to have an energy circle before the day really kicked off.

Most of you know outdoor photography is by far my favorite, but I am learning and experimenting with ways that I actually like using indoors too. I feel this photo of the couple is timeless with an air of old fashion likeness.

Randy & Suzanne - you two are just the cutest, and have the biggest hearts that are so apparent from anyone who has the opportunity to meet you. I wish you both the best, and happiest of years together!

Colleen & Steve's Wedding (Cincinnati, Ohio)

What a way to end a great number of events photographing together (Brittany is off to Belgium and I to Maryland shortly)...my photography mentor and I photographed Colleen & Steve's wedding in Cincinnati last weekend at the beautiful Maketewa Country Club.

It was a hot and muggy day, but thank goodness for beautiful interiors with lots of windows! Sometimes window light is even better than outdoors - especially in the heat of the day with full sun.

These beautiful photos of Colleen were taken using window light...

I absolutely love a good group photo that shows personality: most of you know I am not much for the stand in line and look at me ones :-)

This one has such a great feel...

This may be the biggest wedding party I have worked with, but the group shot worked well. Definitely with groups this large you need 2 photographers!

And last, but not least the gorgeous cathedral. I was in awe at its beauty, and wanted to curse all the stairs leading to the balconies all at the same time.

I am grateful to have been given the opportunity so early in my art career to be asked to be a part of the NOLAA's cooperative. By joining the cooperative I have the chance over the next year to not only have guaranteed space to show my work, but also the opportunity to help the gallery grow its reputation and status.

You really should make a trip to Yellow Springs, OH to check out the gallery in person. Our coop has a good diversity of artists - a little something for everyone with original art starting around $20!!!

The 3rd Friday of the month is a great time to make a night of Yellow Springs - all the stores are open late, and there is an abundance of street performers, musicians, art, wine, food, and people.

End of the Week and Weekend

I had the best date night this week, and a much needed one at that! Me and my hunny had a great dinner at Haiku in Columbus followed by going to listen to my favorite female vocal artist, Tristan Prettyman.

Today's art show, Art on the Lawn in Yellow Springs, went GREAT. The weather, the conversations with customers, and the talent and variety of artists were out of this world. Thanks to everyone who stopped by!

He did manage to make me take a break for a while, but he got tired of guarding the computer after a few hours.

This past weekend I had the privilege to photograph Sarah & Adam's wedding. They had so much fun, and are so amazing together as a couple. Their reception was by far the most original I have seen - a big 'ole pool party! Everyone had a blast and was comfortable - the way it should be!

Weddings should showcase your personality and be about you...Adam & Sarah did that to a "T."
